Mille Lacs Lake: Building a sustainable future

    MnDNR Mille Lacs webpage-link

View an introductory presentation that explains what’s happening at Mille Lacs Lake and what steps DNR is taking to restore the lake’s renowned walleye fishery.
Improving Mille Lacs Lake’s walleye fishery as expediently as possible with as little negative impact to the local community as possible is the state’s primary goal.
The situation will not turn around for several years. It will take time – as well as careful management, monitoring and analysis – for enough smaller walleyes to grow into the larger walleyes that anglers prefer to catch and that can contribute to future reproduction.
Even so, Mille Lacs remains a quality sport fishery. In addition to high numbers of large walleye, excellent quality fishing exists for northern pike, smallmouth bass and muskellunge.
Time and experience have proven that Mille Lacs is a resilient multi-species fishery for the anglers of Minnesota and tourists beyond our borders. A combination of regulations friendly to small walleye and cooperation among all users now will build and enhance the long-term sustainability of the fishery.
“The new regulations reflect our commitment to improving the walleye fishery as quickly as possible with as little harm to the local economy as possible,” said Don Pereira, DNR fisheries chief.
More liberal northern pike and smallmouth bass regulations speak to the fact these species can withstand additional pressure because their populations are at or near record highs. The current walleye regulation and extended night fishing ban will protect upcoming year classes of young walleye, adult spawning stock and help ensure the harvest stays within the safe harvest level.
    2014 Regulations
    • Walleye: Two fish 18-20 inches. One may be longer than 28 inches.
    • Night fishing: No fishing from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday, May 12, through Monday, Dec. 1.
    • Northern pike: Ten fish. One may be longer than 30 inches. Season closes March 29, 2015.
    • Smallmouth bass: Six fish. One may be longer than 18 inches. Season opens Saturday, May 10, and is exempt from mid-September catch-and-release regulation, allowing smallmouth to be caught through Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015.

Ok, that is the MnDNR Statement from their webpage on Mille Lacs

Now that that is said and the rest of the info. from the DNR is available from their webpage link, I’ll add my own take:

    IMO:

The Federal Government and State of Minnesota Government have all cowered to the Tribal Governments and allowing their Sovereign Nation status to create a multiple class of people groups as far as Wildlife Management is concerned.

We No Longer have EQUAL RIGHTS as AMERICANS and we are No Longer EQUAL.

We have become a Nation Divided, not just over this issue on the management of Lake Mille Lacs, but in most all areas of our daily lives.

The Tribal members have more rights than any other class of Americans when it comes to taking of Fish on Lake Mille Lacs.

The Gays have more rights than most other Americans when it comes to many other facets of our lives, as business owners cannot choose even when it comes to their own Religious Beliefs, you must forego your own convictions and serve everybody equally even if it violates your beliefs.

Muslims have more rights than Christians as far as many Court Cases have Ruled.

Non-Smokers have more rights than any business owner, as a business owner, you in Minnesota can no longer permit smoking within the confines of your private business. You can’t even provide a separate room for smoking.

As a group of anyone, particular race or group, you cannot open up a Casino or house of Gambling, as that is only allowed for Tribal Governments and the State Government.

That said, what I am getting at is we are no longer the land of the Free with EQUAL RIGHTS for ALL!

They, the Federal & State Government has bent and twisted all of the rules to provide Un-Equal Rights for certain groups of people, whether by Race or Religion right before our eyes.

We as a people have let our Government strip one right after another away and we did not care enough for our neighbors right, then they were no longer going to stand up for our rights.

    What is next?
Who will stand up for your Rights when they come to take away your Guns or Ban Lead Fishing Tackle or force you to use Barbless Hooks?

It is time for a REVOLT!

It is time to talk (Call, Write or otherwise communicate) with your Elected Representatives and let them know your are ANGRY and things need to change starting with Electing someone who will follow the Constitution and bring back EQUAL RIGHTS!

Good Day, Enough of my soapbox!

PS: I look for this thread to be locked in record time!

The key to long term management is allow netting, introduce invasive species and non-native fish species and ban night fishing….

    Simple Plan.

Sigh. Ok. Name one, just one right that Muslims have that Christians don’t. Just one.

Name one right that gays have that the rest of us don’t. Just one. Oh, that’s right. You can’t.

Want to do business in the US? You have to follow the law. That means treating all people equally. Blacks? Sure. You have to serve them. Interracial couples? You gotta serve them. Sorry about that. Catholics? Yup. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to go into business.

Now, I totally agree that the tribal “Nations” is pure crap. Separate but better than equal. They DO have special rights and the supreme court has ruled it so. I don’t know how that will change, but I agree that it must at some point.

What I have never understood is that the tribes do have the right to harvest, but why do they get 50% of the resource? Since they are 1% of the population, why don’t they get 1% of the resource?
