I question the plans mentioned in the Outdoor News this week. The tribal netting plans may be done in lakes other than Mille Lacs this coming spring? Charlie Rasmussen a spokes person for the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission stated.
I wonder what property owners on lakes other than Mille Lacs will think or like about this?

They can think all they want but there is not much they can do about it. Sad state of affairs

Is this something that they are going to do, or something they have proposed? I would be beside myself if the state would let them actually carry on with this out of this world idea. I can just about imagine the protests this would spark.

BigHan, how is it any different than what has been happening for 15 years on Mille Lacs? The spineless media will bury their heads in the sand… While the message boards burn with indignant fervor….And the DNR shrugs, then points the blame up hill. (Because they’re as spineless as the rest of us)

When the tribes first started netting years ago, I took a neutral stance on the issue for the first few months.
That was until I was fishing on Goose lake near Harris, which was in the ceded territory. When we started fishing that day, there were 3 nets out in the lake. After a couple hours, a boat came out and pulled all the nets, but we weren’t close enough to see what they were getting. Upon the boat leaving, we drove over the spots, only to find several 30 plus inch northerns floating and left for dead. Probably to keep their northern quota down?
Upon seeing this, my attitude changed completely, and unless the indians follow the rules, it will stay against the netting.
A couple years ago, I remember a truckload of dead northerns was discovered near Mille Lacs. Nothing ever came of an investigation, and all was forgotten.
Until our state DNR starts enforcing what the tribes do on the water, as well as what happens after they leave the water, the tribes will keep doing their thing. That is, until we have an entire territory to restock, just like what hapened to Red Lake.

Now I’m not up on all my tribe knowledge, but does the DNR have the authority to shut these people down if they are caught doing illegal acts? I was always under the assumption that they were protected because they are on tribal territory. Like I said, I am not an expert on this topic by any means. I totally argee with you guys on what they have done to Mille Lacs, and I cannot believe the state hasn’t done a darn thing about it. To let them jump lakes because they have basically destroyed one of the best walleye lakes in the state of Minnesota, something needs to be done to stop this. I sure hope everything works out and they stand their ground. These people have had too many handouts already and it would be insane if they let this pass.

Yes, the tribal nets have set in lakes other than Mille Lacs in the past. But to what degree? how many lakes….how many nets = how many fish?
If they don’t get their numbers from Mille Lacs they might get them elsewhere

Welcome to what happened in WI. I have a cabin in ceded territory. In 1987 when they started spearing etc we had 7 resorts on the 2 lakes I can boat to on my chain of lakes now we have one. We had a 5 walleye limit 15 in min. now we can have 2 1 under 14 inch 1 over 14 inch. OR basically a one fish limit as most walleye you catch are over 14 inches. Oh and the DNR basically quit stocking lakes at the rates they were in the 70’s and early 80’s. Now the DNR is blaming bass for the walleye decline after they quit stocking and they are being harvested during the spawn on lakes with poor natural reproduction. So MN lakes in the Ceded territory prepare yourselves they are coming. Remember the members that are doing the harvesting are not the Mille Lacs tribe they are the WI ones why they are included I do not know but they will fully exercise there rights as they have in WI almost always maxing out there take.

And to the posts regarding enforcement by the DNR. The Tribal DNR or GLB whatever it is called must enforce the rules the State DNR has no say. That is what we were told in WI.

The only enforcement I see by tribal DNR is keeping guys like me with cameras away from the public boat landings.

The tribes have netted lakes as close the the twin cities as Green and Chisago. Don’t think they won’t ruin a lake near you!

    Jon

Same as what happens in WI at the boat landings. We just don’t go any more pointless to stir the pot.

I believe that is true. Point is once Mille LAcs is netted out of fish, the tribes will just move on and destroy the next lake. This is not just a Mille Lacs problem!

Kidfish…When the natives were busted for dumping all those beautiful wasted Northerns (and walleyes…) the tribal police said they would investigate and prosecute to the full extent of tribal law…Aha, sure you will…
