Last couple weekends been out with the kids and have hooked into alot of pike also in Cove Bay casting and bobber fishing with suckers.
July 9, 2004 at 4:33 am #311906I been gittin some around my area, but how you rig the poles for suckers? Like what spacing and all that. Id really like to give that a try.
July 9, 2004 at 2:36 pm #311935Joe, the Quick Strike rig is popular. Fish this rig under a large slip bobber. Place an egg sinker on the line just above the rig. This will keep your minnow in the strike zone. Then its just a matter setting the depth. I like to set up my bobbers just outside the edge of the weedline and set it about 2-3 feet off bottom. Quick Strike rigs are meant to set the hooks right after the bobber goes down. This prevents any damage to the fish incase they swallow the bait like when using single hooks.
Note the photo says optional spinner. In Mn, I think its still the law that you need the spinner to make the rig a legal lure. Most baitshops in Mn sell them that way but I did see one shop selling them with colored beads instead of spinner blades.
Hook the front treble in the minnows cheek and the back treble under the top dorsal fin.
nubbinbuckPosts: 922August 24, 2004 at 5:28 pm #318629Just looking for some very general info. After the IDA outing, I am pumped to get up there again over the Labor Day weekend.
I would like to spend part of the day going after Pike. Are there some general tips or areas of the lake you might recommend. Not looking to get your top secret spots, just a starting point….
August 26, 2004 at 3:24 am #318913Just about any cabbage bed is holding pike. Most fish are decent sized. For bigger pike, troll cranks in the deeper basin areas of the bays.
August 26, 2004 at 3:49 am #318915The area around Mac’s Twin Bay on the east side was hot as a pistol last year about this time and on into October. If I remembe right, “anything orange” was the ticket and it was a casting bite. Spoons n’ spinners to the cabbage edge. Numbers were really good with the occassional dandy.
August 26, 2004 at 2:52 pm #318969Don’t be afraid of the north shore breakline by Garrison Creek, on eastward. Largest pike there, was boated by my buddy Hedder. Fish was about 47 to 48″ long……Plenty of 10 to 15 pounders up there in the fall too……..
smokercraftPosts: 40August 27, 2004 at 11:17 am #319114Could you explain the 50/50 method? Never heard of that before.
ThanksnubbinbuckPosts: 922August 27, 2004 at 12:44 pm #319126Smokercraft,
I could be wrong, but he is placing the snap weight 50 ft. ahead of the lure, then letting out an add’l 50 ft. 100 total feet of line out.August 27, 2004 at 12:44 pm #31912750/50= lure, 50 feet of line, snap weight, then 50 more feet of line.
August 27, 2004 at 3:00 pm #319142Going up tomorrow morning to launch at sunrise to chase the tunas………..
I will be working the north end with some trolling and jerk/crank casting. Anyone else going to be on the water hunting???
August 27, 2004 at 3:15 pm #319146Yeah, I’ll be out tonight or early tomorrow, i’ve got a couple new baits to run.
August 27, 2004 at 3:26 pm #319149I’ll be out tonight trolling for eyes. If I get out during the day, I’ll be looking for bass.
Good Luck.
