Im confused by the netting rant. if netting walleyes in the problem ie, too few walleyes in the lake, then how come the existing walleyes have had a problem competing for food the last few years? In theory the exising walleyes should have had an easy time getting fat because of less competition in their niche. Still the masses rave about the nets…..

I won’t say the nets are THE reason the lake is in it’s current decline. It’s ludicrous to think that they don’t play A part though.

agreed. netting is one of the few controllable variables in a changing and complex puzzle. along with sportfishing, interspecies dependency, etc….
Before we hang the DNR and tribal fisheries managers, maybe its ok to acknowledge that this is a difficult problem to solve….

The net defenders don’t often realize just how little regulation there is during the spring netting runs. How the natives treat species like northern pike with extreme prejudice. Do I think nets are the ONLY problem. No. As a matter of fact, if they were held to the same standards as the hook/line fisherman and regulated in a more stringent manner, I may even support some netting.

I hope I am not being labeled as a “netting defender.” If you watch some of the Youtube videos on the subject, you will know just what Kooty is talking about. It’s a joke to call it regulated at all at times.

    Agreed.

Like I said before, if the harvest for either nation actually hit the DNR quotas, we probably wouldn’t be in this predicament. Even if the quotas were actually hit, then who’s to blame? The nets? The angler?

No. The DNR… And all of us for not doing enough.

Seems the walleye fishing community (as a whole) doesn’t have enough balls to show up at meetings, start interest groups, donate money to organizations to get involved. It takes more than guides and resort owners to make a difference at the DNR.

Is there actually some kind of walleye fishing interest group I haven’t heard about?

    Think muskies, Muskies Inc
Hunting, ducks unlimited, pheasants forever. All of these groups have a ton of influence.

One reason you don’t see large organizations, this is a local issue, rarely heard of outside of the Mn borders. The range is extending, but the reality is if you can find me someone in Kansas, Missouri or outside any of our neighboring states who is really up to speed on this issue, I’ll be quite surprised. Another major reason that would prevent an organization from forming or getting on board with this fight is instantly being labeled racist. In our PC society today, that alone scares off 90% of the folks who simply don’t want to deal with the whack jobs.

Heck, look at the responses we’ve gotten from our local, state and federal representatives. They are ALL quick to dismiss responsibility to this issue and point you in another direction. Our lying governor is a perfect example. The DNR talking heads won’t push the issue because they are appointed by the same lier.

Personally, I would not be surprised if the GLFWIC thumbs their nose in the air at the white man once again this spring. They have no reason not to. Heck, ask them why they don’t ticket people for leaving ramps without checking in, for leaving nets unattended etc… The fact is, they don’t care about natural resources. They know in time the white man will pay to fix the issue.

    Just my opinion of course.

Like John was saying most people run from the Mille Lacs problem. I would guess the same 100 people have donated to Fellegy and SaveMilleLacsSportFishing.com. While thousands have continued to support netting by patronizing the Casino’s.

Anglers can blame the DNR, we can blame nets, we can blame the President, we can blame government. But before blaming them we should stand in front of the mirror and blame who we see there.

Somebody once said……”United we stand, divided we fall.” I’m pretty sure they were talking about the Mille Lacs issue.

Many of the supporters have supported both the C.a.s.s.t effort along with savemillelacssportfishing.org
And that list is only a few hundred strong!
