Mille Lacs Update

Quite possibly the only good thing to come from all this recent cold weather is that it’s been helping the ice up at Mille Lacs. Most of the resorts are now starting to pull houses and allowing vehicle traffic up to 1/2 ton for people fishing out of portables. If you’re looking to take advantage of the warmer temps this weekend and make a run up to Mille Lacs you’ve definitly got options but please call ahead if you are bringing anything more than a portable as with offroad travel still not recommended and lack of parking space on the roads I’m not positive if you’ll be able to get out with a wheelhouse yet or even anything larger than a 1/2 ton vehicle.

Here is a quick status for the local resorts of what I’ve been hearing…

Paul at Appeldorns told me their rentals should all be out by early this week and they’ll have roads out at least to the local reefs for people to fish out of portables.

Red Door has a road out to the first breakline on the North side of the lake and is pulling rentals. They will hopefully soon have one to the nearest Northern flats but is proceeding very cautiously as they pride themselves on not being one of the resorts that seem to dump a plow truck in the lake every few years.

Castaways now has a road out to the 3 mile breakline out from Malmo and is pulling rentals. The attached picture is courtesy of my friends up in Malmo and the word is the morning/evening bite has been decent in the Malmo area.

I haven’t heard specifically about vehicle traffic out of Hunters but I know that as 2 weeks ago they had a staked trail to the flats for ATVs. Knowing how on top of things George always is I’m sure Hunters will have roads to the local reefs (3 mile, 2 mile, etc.) and quite likely to the flats.

Good luck and if you do head up please stop back with report!

I stayed in an appledorns rental friday-sunday and also used hunters access sunday morning.

Dorns as of this has roads in their usual spots. I took a road all the way out to the 31’break west of shaws/hennepin. 12″ of ice in the spots that had heavy snow.
Found slush anytime i got too far off the road whether around isle bay or out from appledorns. Can find 2′ of ice in the thin snow areas.

Really slow bite for me this weekend. Put in more effort drinking beer than catching fish.
