I spent a little time going after the smallies on Mille Lacs the last two evening. With the calm winds and warmer temperatures the lake temp is up to 72 deg’s!!!!!!!This surface temp in the shallows…..the smallies are really taking off! Tonite I caught 7 in around 1 1/2 hrs. Not the greatest, but it is alittle better than last night and the night before. One hit today, I thought I had three bass on at the same time! I had one on and two others chasing the Orange core ringworm from B-Fish-N tackle. I had caught a couple on a gold shine K-Grug and decided to go orange. Well that was a good move!

Were you finding the fish relating to the bays or the islands and reefs?

The larger numbers were in the sand/rock transitions in around 4 feet of water. I saw schools of 5-6 bass together!
The areas were close to a rocky shoreline on the eastside of Mille Lacs.

    Hey Bobber,
You were on the money as far as location was concerned on Friday. I saw and cought many fish in the 15″-18″ range. A black twister-tail was the ticket for me.

This was a good day considering I started the day out at the boat ramp in Isle and locked the keys in the truck. I guess the lock-smith from Garrison was friendly and reasonable at $50. Got on the water at about 9a.m. and started to fish a reef the extended out from shore. I pulled out the baitcaster with a firetiger RattleRap and proceeded to make a very long cast. On the forward motion the lure went out about 30 feet or so and I felt a slight tug on the rod and reel. I did not think much of it because I was so impressed with the distance of my cast, it must have went 100 yards at least. As I proceeded to reel in the line it was then I noticed the line had broken at a loop on the spool causing the lure to sail. After this mishap I put down the bautcaster and picked up a spinning rig with a jig. Noticed I was off course and gave the trolling motor a kick and got back into position. Once there I slowed down the motor and started to fish until I noticed I was drifting away. As it turns out my 74 Maxium is operating only on 1 speed, 75% or nothing.

Well, that was the last of the things to go wrong. From that point I started to catch fish. I nursed the trolling motor the rest of the day. Each spot I went to produced either zero fish or 2-3 fish. It sure was a blast.

The trolling motor is covered under warranty and it took 1 day to fix. I am going back this weekend to fish with my daughter. Hopefully the fish will still be cooperative. I can not wait to see the expression on her face when she tangles with one of those spunky smallies.

    Thanks again Bobber.
