I’ll be making my first trip to the pond and I’m sure I’ll need a nice handheld GPS unit. Any suggestions? Something that I can punch in coordinates, somewhat in-expensive, and whatever else you may feel I need.
    Thanks much!

I bought a Garmin GPS 72, and I love it. I knew nothing of GPS technology and I picked it up easily with this model. I am pretty sure this model is entry level, but it has a bunch of functions and plenty of storage (waypoints, routes, etc..) for me. Works great for fishing/hunting. They are $159.99 at Cabelas. I pretty much just use it to mark spots, and find my way back to where I started. We just got back from Ely. We portaged in to Basswood and beyond. The GPS was awesome for that. Took a lot of the guess work out of getting back to the boat launch. I also have the portages and some fishing spots in the GPS. So if I don’t go back there for 5 years I will have no problem finding my way around. One thing I have learned is to have it with you at all times (like a camera) Never know when you want to mark something. I’m sure there are guys on this site that can tell you exactly what you need, and what every function will do for you. I am just letting you know what this GPS beginner has found.

Best I have found in the Garmin Map 76C, this is a color handheld with lots of memory and an amazing response time. I have the Map 76, but not the color model. I will be getting the color model next for sure. Great unit!
