I think alot of it has to do with water change over to fall temps throughout the lake.

I have always believed that there is a population of walleyes in that lake that relate to weedline forage base throughout the summer. They are just difficult to present a lure or bait to.The system seems to be divided during the summer.

As the water cools I think you have more of the lakes population moving to those shallow areas looking for the forage base that has moved from the deep basin areas into the shallow cool water. IMHO

I’m not a guide but I did stay at a holiday inn last night.

for me, the late summer bite is usually an indicator of what will generally happen in fall. Not that you cant catch them, but it is looking like its going to be very tough most nights….

I think it is slow right now becase the high water temps and the amount of forage still being chased out in the basin.
With colder water temps the forage will concentrate in the shallows and the eyes will follow. Year in and year the bite is solid. We just have to be patient. It won’t take long with the colder nights. Besides, we have the Vikes to keep us entertained

Yeah, those Vikes….It’s a sad autumn when I’ve caught the same numbers of walleyes trolling after dark as they have wins.

But yes, I do remember years where the big perch have been up shallow in the fall, and the big schools of tullies are up shallow, too. Now, if the weatherman/woman would only give me a forecast that didn’t have highs in the mid-70’s and lows in the 60’s for the foreseeable future.

Always make a trip up the first couple weeks of Oct.going up the 1st for a week and not happy with the water temps and forcast.
We will still catch some fish and have fun doing it.Maybe not the numbers as last year but one hell of a lot better than work.

Hey Stuart. I seem to remember you guys switching gears last year and doing something that no one talks about on Mille lacs. How did that work for ya last year. I think that will work again this year and we will be up there a week after you. after 2 slow nights last year we switched to daytime jig casting and bobbered large minnow species. We caught a lot of fish in the same spots that didn’t produce while night time trolling. Best part was we didn’t hardly see a boat all day and we got to go in at normal hours, watch some football and sleep normal hours.

I you happen to do this again this year, could you PM me how you do as we will be coming up the week after you.

    thanks and Good Luck

Just got off the pond for the second night in a row. 0 walleyes in 2 nights of trolling for 2 boats. We have fished every rock and weed spot from Indian point north to Wealthwood, from 14-4 ft of water, with stick baits, shad style baits, and slip bobbers. I am sure the fish are biting somewhere for someone, but IT IS TOUGH! Going to trailer the boats up to Leech tomorrow morning. Gotta catch a walleye!
