I’ve been on the water a lot over the last couple of weeks. No doubt – there’s a lot of baitfish out in the open basin right now (perch and tullibees) which is certainly affecting the mood of the open basin walleyes. You need to cover a lot of water and find the right fish willing to cooperate. Once you find them, you need to stay on them and wait for them to turn on. Be patient and persistent and once you get catch one – you need to replicate that presentation amongst your other lines and work that school over and over again. Storm Deep Thundersticks (chrome colors) trolled on lead core is best right now at speeds around 2.3 mph. My boat is averaging about 20 fish per outing with many big fish landing in the net – 8 over the 28 inch mark over the last couple of weeks. And what’s with all the big pike out there this year? I’m averaging about 2 a day now anywhere from 34-40 inches. Maybe I should start doing some open water trolling clinics for pike!
