I am headed up Friday for a day of fishing on Mille Lacs, for the first time this weekend. Any suggestions on locations for the eyes. I like to drag raps and crawlers. Currently using the whiffer II lake map. Thanks

    dperry,

I just returned from a 10 day run to the pond. I’m working on a report that I hope to post late tonight or tomorrow. (Lot’s to get caught up on!!)

But here are a few things to chew on in the meantime. The Wave Wacker tourney is Thurs-Friday this week. If you can make the weigh in at the Fisherman’s Wharf resort on Friday, I’m sure there will be plenty of opportunity to pick up some pointers! (We have a few staffer who will be in the tourney.)

You mention Shadraps and Crawlers. I did spend a fair amount of time trolling Raps without much luck at all. Same for crawlers. Usually the south end rocks are on fire in the evening hours trolling #5 shad raps, but not this year yet. (Note: the current warm weather may change that in a hurry)

My boat had the best luck lindy rigging jumbo leeches in 18-24 feet of water in sand/gravel areas. Look for the first breaks to the deeper water within the first mile from shore. The mid lake bars were not as productive but there are fish there. Pull a crawler through these same areas and our results were disappointing to say the least.

The last hour of the day before the 10pm lake closure is your best bet for a mix of slots and an occasional hog. 11-17 feet near steeper breaks on Big Point, Doe Island and Hawkbill were all producing fish last weekend.

Good Luck and let us know how ya do.

    Jon,

Can you tell me where Fishermans Wharf is located on the lake. I’d really like to see the weigh-in. Thanks.

The Warf is located on the east side on Big Point. (About 6.5 mile north of Isle on 47)

    See website and directions at:

Thanks Jon. BTW, that spare trailer tire I bought from you last year came in really handy over the weekend!! Are you fishing the whackers?

No Wacker for me. I’m kinda in between partners this year. Possibly do the RCL league or one of the Couples tourneys out of Hunters and Macs, but that’s about it this year.

Glad to hear that spare came in handy for ya.

After fishing this weekend I wish I would have decided to fish the Wacker. Although, it would mean driving all night to get to Oahe immediatly after the Wacker it would have been worth it.

The fishing on the Pond is terrific right now. I fished Sunday AM with a friend to check out some of my typical Wave Wacker spots. Within an hour we had our limit of slots and a bunch of JUMBO perch to boot. Well, that is how it goes I guess.

The fishing actually got better from there. We managed to catch a few smallies and a legal Muskie and a Limit of Dandy bluegills and a few crappie before we left the pond. This is my favorite time to fish the lake. If you have been holding out on getting up to Mille Lacs and doing some fishing, this is the time
