Are you getting the strong South winds that were predicted for today?

Yup! The south wind moved the sheet about 6:45 this morning and then about 2 pm. this afternoon it really got a hold of it and moved it into 20ft. high plus piles completely blocking the road along the lake east of Myr Mar. The county had a dozer clearing the road from the early one and had to come back (as I type ) and clear it again. It also came into and almost got Doc’s Resort’s home and lakeside garage. (within 5 ft. of the home and garage–for now)

If ya look at the webcam here (Fellegy’s Perch), the very bottom left of the view shows some white ice at the top of the bank. That is piled 45 ft. high to get onto the camera view–above the main lake level. The time lapses around 2 pm. should be interesting…

Anyone have an educated guess about the likelihood of an ice-free upcoming weekend?

I would say 80 percent chance on at least 80 percent of the up wind part of the lake. In other words…MOST of the lake should be ice free by late Thursday if the wind blows out of the west/NW late Tuesday and Wednesday as they forecast.

    Here’s a current satellite photo.

It’s definitly starting to break up and the wind forecast could hardly be any better but but after seeing how solid and thick the main ice sheet was last weekend I’m still not as confident that it will be open by this weekend as I was a week ago.

    Let’s go mother nature!

One thing for sure…it will break the all-time ice out record of 1950 which is now being called May 15th near as I know.

Official ice out criteria is an ice free ride from Garrison to Isle. If the wind blows hard enough and is sustained long enough from the west/NW, I think it is possilbe to have that criteria met by sometime on Thursday. The ice in the NW third of the lake is pretty bad right now. Quite fragmented. Easy for the waves to do away with. Then by late Thursday, wind from a southerly direction is in forecast. More west wind on Friday. Done deal?

Time will tell…and the big wind or lack of will be the key.

Wow, the webcam at “steve’s perch” is pretty sweet today. Can’t. Stop. Watching. Time-lapse.

If the wind forecast is right, it should be interesting right before the camera goes off at dark. The front will hit and turn the ice around pretty fast I suspect and send it sailing east/SE. I doubt we will see ice Wednesday morning from here…if the wind/front holds true to the forecast.

The wind just switched here about 20 minutes ago–5 pm.–and it is heading east FAST! If it blows like this for the next 24 hrs.–it will be gone by the weekend I think.

Somebody is getting some ice in their laps as I type…the east cams should start seeing ice piles? It’s going by here FAST!

Pretty wild….Hunters webcam was pretty much clear most of the day and now the ice is rolling in there fast. The sheet is really on the move in a short time.

Will–you might be right. In the sun today, the ice was very white. If there isn’t several miles of open water on the NW and north side by late tomorrow, it might not happen by the weekend…I all my bets off the table! LOL

If this NW wind blows this hard for the next 12 hours or so, I doubt there will be too mcuh left for the next wind switch to deal with–Thursday. In the past 3 hours, there is about 3 miles of open water now on the west/NW side and growing larger fast. The big waves are really walking accross the the lake…

I doubt I will see any ice from my place by morning at this rate. But I also doubt I will be able to drive a boat from Garrison to Isle tomorrow–so no ice out . Maybe Thursday.

It was 90 yesterday on the upwind side of the lake and 65 on the down wind side.

Well, I see no ice–even with ten power glasses–from 65 ft. above the lake. Let’s hope it stays clear and we can get a pic from above today. Will it be official today or tomorrow? A few hours we should know…

Funny, but that’s the first thing I thought when I woke up and looked out at clear skies this morning.

The ice line is between Malmo Bay and Carlsona and then heads to the SW. Looks pretty slushy. All ice S -SW from wilderness lodge. No damage from the ice here from wind last night. Dean

I agree…I can now see the ice line out in the middle—that runs about across from the Malmo area to just east of Cove Bay–with ice covering most of the mudflat country southeast of Matton Flat and out to 8 mile and then south. So east and southeast of that line….ice.

See if the pic from above today verifies what we see. If we get a clear view for a good pic.

So, if that line is right….approximately how much of the lake is open.

Close to half–maybe more, probably a little less than half ….if what I see is reality.
