What is that gator doing on Mille Lacs (ok, maybe too much Swamp People)?

I looked at all the webcams this AM. There won’t be much fishable water by Saturday.

Just my guess –with the wind as forecast between now and then –including the wind Saturday, the only fishable water if any will be on the northern end of things. Unless we get a stiff south breeze between now and when the big north winds hit late this week, the ice won’t have room to move much–even with the north big wind. There has to be open water on the downwind side ( in this case the southern shores) for the wind to move the ice sheet any amount. I doubt the upwind side will be open enough to allow for big waves to build and pound the ice to pieces as of this weekend. The next two big wind switches after the coming weekend will take it out…as there will be enough play/open water after this weekend for the wind/waves to break it up.

    Just my guess…….

Holy goodness….where did all that open water come from? Is there any water flowing into the lake there?

I’m not positive as I stole the picture from a friend’s FB update. Most likely by one of the creeks flowing in by Malmo.

That’s why I posted the satellite image as well to keep people from thinking there was that much open water everywhere.

It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out if there is enough open water between the ice and the shoreline for boat traffic. Between guys anchoring up and bobbering and those out trolling, it could be even MORE of a fun time than the usual opener.

Just imagine a pile of boats pinned when the sheet moves and guys can’t get off. Boats crushed like pop cans. No thanks. Will miss going been tradition but find better options

Watching some of the time lapse images, from various cameras around the lake, it appears the sheet is starting to shift around some. That’s got to help I would think.

is it just me, or does anyone else see the face of Jesus in Wills satilite pic? North west corner! This will be the first time in 21 years we won’t be set up on the north sand.

It seems the shoreline ice, disconnected from the main sheet is what is mostly moving. These are small lighter chunks of ice. It will take a good blow in the teens mph., at least, to get the main sheet on the move. When that happens, the cams will show small piles of white ice along the downwind shoreline.

I expect it to take at least 2 if not more BIG wind switches to take the main ice sheet out…

The small lakes in the area are still covered in ice. Normally (which this might not be), it takes a week or so to get Lake Mille Lacs ice off after the small lakes are ice free.

My guess, and I could/hope I am wrong, it will be next Tuesday or Wednesday per the wind forecasts.

Warm temps help but this is the key to the ice out.

It’ll be sometime in the next 2 weeks. Just in time for the night ban

    >>> HERE <<< is a time lapse video. The ice is moving a little but not enough

The main sheet will make or is making it’s first big move today–heading west/southwest. That will open some water on the east side and especially in the Malmo area, making some wave action to impact the ice. By Saturday, the big NW wind will use that room created today to move the whole sheet against the east and southern shores. I doubt that big NW wind will open it up on Saturday/Sunday but the big south wind on Monday could put a big dent in it as it comes crashing back to the north shore. Could it be official ice out by Wednesday? If the wind forecast is right…??

It rained pretty good here in Princeton for about a hour yesterday. Did that rain make it up to Mille Lacs?

We had some rain, yes and more this morning so far.

Rain and warm temps obviously help to do away with the ice but the big and most impacting aspect of the ice out process at this stage of the game is the wind. It is all about the wind…

Thanks for posting the pic, Will. I can’t quite see…how far is it between the ice and shore?

Hope the big pond is getting the wind we are having right now. It would be weird to have two MTT evens cancelled on account of ice in the same year!

I’d say there’s very little chance the ice isn’t gone by the 2nd weekend Ben.

It is interesting how the northeastern third of the lake’s ice is now much blacker than the northwestern/southwestern 2/3rds–which is quite white yet. You will know when the ice is close to going out when the mid-lake ice is on the blacker side on a sunny day. (it always fools everyone on cloudy day) If it looks black on a sunny day–it won’t be long.

The big NW wind has piled the ice up 25 ft. high around Picard Point (Bob Carslon’s yard tree top high!) and spots to the south. Spirit Island/Hennepin is buried. About a dozen boats on the north end –mid day.

If the south wind blows hard Monday and piles high on the north shores, and then a good NW blows Wednesday–it could be gone.

    WOW – that is wild!

I obviously hope for minimal damage for everyone but I hope we get the wind to change direction enough to break it up and get it out of there before next weekend!

The forecast is for the wind to go to the south Monday–pretty hard–and that should break it loose from the south shores and get it flying hard toward the north shores.

I would not be surprised that the ice is considered “out” by late Wednesday or sometime Thursday–if the wind forecasts for the week are right.

Wind looks like it is going to blow hard Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday. WIth the warm temps and high winds I will be shocked if we still have a sheet of ice come Thursday.

The south breeze came up at around daylight today and the big ice sheet hit the north shore –with a whimper. It is piled across the paved road just east of Myr Mar and about 15 ft. high along shore but –so far–no big push like the east and south shores saw over the weekend.

Are most of the smaller lakes around the area open yet?
