I am going with a couple of guys for the 1st time to stay in a fish house for a couple of days next weekend (Jan 18-20). Our plan is to look for Perch during the day. We are renting a shack from Appeldoorn’s (near the Wharf) so we will probably be located where ever they are currently dropping the shacks. I am guessing we will not be near the mud flats, we will be in the rocks/gravel area. That being said, any suggestion for Perch in that area this time of the year?

    Jkonop:

Some of my favorite perch areas are on that East and SE side of the lake. The trick there, with all that rock and gravel is to push out away from the structure a bit until you find the mud/sand, mud/hardpan transitions. Keep careful watch on your flasher for how hard (thick) the bottom return is. Test this out with a camera if/as needed.

It gets scary out in no-man’s land, but find some good structure adjacent to deeper water and start drilling your way out deeper. Hope this helps, best of luck!

We stayed at Appledoorns during the same time frame. We got a lot of perch from our house. We found out that they liked the smaller fat heads on the rattle reels. We also caught a few while jigging.
