Buddy of mine from work and I headed up to Mille Lacs on Wednesday night and the fish certainly didn’t disappoint us. Conditions were perfect with the warmer temps,a nice South breeze, and even a little moonlight. Water temperature was around 38-39 degrees. We fished from about 5:30 till 1:30 and ended up with 65 walleyes and 4 pike which is a new record for my boat. Key to our success was to stay just outside the weedline in 13-14 FOW pulling shad shaped crankbaits around 1.2 to 1.4 mph. These fish were on the chew big time but most of them were only barely hooked on the back treble. We had 5 fish under 20 inches with the majority of eyes in the 20-23 inch range. Our biggest eye was just under 28 inches and we had about a dozen fish that were 24.5 or bigger. It was a great night on the Pond that we will remember for a long time!Good luck to anyone heading up despite the colder temps.

Wow, great job. We were up on Tuesday and REALLY struggled. Good to know someone was catching them!

No I probably won’t be able to get another trip up to Mille Lacs before freeze up unless I hop in another boat with someone. Kind of a sad day as I dropped boat off to get winterized. Regarding a few of the fish being a little on the skinny side this year, it was only some of the larger 25 inch plus walleyes as all of the 20-24 inchers were really fat and plump. Personally I am not real surprised that we are seeing a few skinny fish since the baitfish and young of the year perch populations are way down this year. In years past, we had a year here and there with a few skinny fish but they were always followed up by fat healthy fish the next year. Let’s hope we don’t see any skinny walleyes on Mille Lacs in 2013.
