My wife and I are having our first vacation of the year up at Mille Lacs. We are staying Friday through Sunday at McQuoid’s and I am hoping to show her some good fishing. We will not be doing any trolling, just jigging, spinner rigs and/or bobbers. What advice can you give me on locations/bait so I can show her some fish. Thank you in advance for the advice!

You are thinking like a man. She does not care whether you catch fish or not. After jigging your [censored] off,go to the market, buy some fillets, alcohol? and enjoy your time together.

    Brian,
shoreline reefs that drop off to deeper water near-by, or stand alone reefs might hold fish.
Mid spring fish will be moving shallow for feeding. Day time they might be just off the 8-10 foot edge.
Do keep the little Lady warm, dress for winter and pocket warmers and gloves. Nothing shortens a day than getting too cold. Especially for a person who doesn’t breathe fishing.
    good luck,
let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I will be dressing her in my ice fishing suit and winter boots to keep her warm. She never seems to get too warm for some reason. We also have a hot tub in our room for her (us) to use to warm up after a cold day of fishing. Fishing is not her biggest hobby by any means, so I plan to wine and dine her to make sure she feels appreciated. Any tips on good places to eat? On and off the lake?

Patronize the local resorts for dining. It’s between seasons (Open water & ice) and they will appreciate all the business they can get. Just stay away from the evil empire and you will have a good time.

Buzzies on the bay can be good to eat at. Pretty good diner buffet and heard the Sunday morning brunch is supposed to be real good to.

Good reefs right out of Mac’s marina. Pick one left or right depending on wind and set up in 8-10′. Leeches and minnows.

Nitti’s Hunter’s Point 7 or 8 miles north of McQuiods is a great place to eat. Wonderful food. For breakfast, the Tackle Box with gravy at Walleye Dundees in Wahkon. The little cafe right in Isle is also good. Only open until 2pm. I have eaten at Buzzies. Not the best in my experience. Toucan’s has good food. They are about 4/5 miles north of your place. Good luck!!

I agree 100% with Where’s Waldo? Buzzy runs a fun place but the food is just okay at best. Toucans has the most interesting food but the chef issue is in flux again there. I will say that Toucans is real fun to take a boat to and tie up & party. Until the steak house re-opens in Wahkon the only place around there where you are not eating in a bar is Izaty’s. I haven’t eaten there (Izatys)for a couple of years though so no real opinion on the food. Bayview, between Wahkon & US 169 on MN 27 has good food & outstanding pizza.
Fishing? Maybe get some small fatheads and bobber up and jerk some perch.
Perch going out in front of your place WW?

How would I know? I haven’t wet a line in about a month. I hope to remedy that next week though. Are you gonna be in the NW corner? Let’s stay in touch.

I agree. The pizza at Bayview is excellent. The bowling alley in Isle serves the same stuff. Not near the atmosphere as Bayview, but good eats and very close to McQoids.

Took the wife to Tucans tonight. I had steak and my wife had scallops. The food was amazing and the drinks were delicious. I had a few bloody marys and my wife had some of their mixed uv drinks. Great place for dinner. Probably going to Izatys tomorrow eve as they are having live music. Hopefully we can find some walleyes or any other fish. I just want to see my wife catch something on this mini vacation. I am open to more tips! Colors/locations. We will be renting a boat all day, stopping somewhere for lunch, hopefully filet some fish, then off to dinner. Let me know if any of you Ido`ers will be around the area. We would be happy to meet you for dinner at Izatys or somewhere else. We would also be happy to meet you somewhere on the lake. Good night and good fishing!

    Glad you enjoyed Toucans.

The bite has been tough from what I;ve seeb in my limited recent experiance. I spent half a day throwing for muskies on Wed. but bagged it when the wind just got too rough. We had a nice pike & a 30″ + walleye that had to go 10lbs + but on muskie gear neither one was very exciting. 100 lb line on a 8′ stick takes the fight out.

Why not hire a guide. I know it is short notice but Terry might be able to set you up or talk to his manager Josh B. Josh’s grandfather might be there & Josh also guides some. His grandfather, Lloyd, & I know each other through work.

If you are renting a boat the cost wouldn’t be that much more.

WW..I’m in EB this weekend. I’ll be by your shop this week & we can talk. I’d be up for a night trip soon. I usually don’t go up that way until I pull the dock and hoist, which will be soon.
