How much wind is too much?

With bite being so good this year I finally was able to get up there with my boat for the first time (I put up a report a couple weeks ago). The day I went up before was perfectly calm almost all day which is fine with me, easier boat control.

Since then I have been wanting to get back with my wife and get her catching some of the big fish up there. The only day that she can get off is this Thursday but it looks like the wind is predicted to be blowing around 14 from the west. I was planning on fishing the west side gravel or mud anyway but how big will the waves be out far enough to catch fish? I know she wouldn’t enjoy it if the rollers were getting too big and it will also make it tough to control my boat in a west wind. just looking for thoughts from others with experience on the lake. Thanks

If it is truly blowing at the most 14mph from the west and you are fishing western gravel and flats I would say you’d see 2 footers at most. If you have a bigger boat I wouldn’t think twice of fishing anywhere on Mille Lacs in 14mph winds.

If they kick up to 20+ then it can get kinda sporty out there.

If the wind is from the west and you are fishing the west side, you should be fine, a 14 knot wind will produce waves, but not dangerous to fish in. We were there a few weeks ago and the winds were 15-20 from the south west and we were on the north end in 2-3 foot rollers. I was back trolling in my pro guide, and it wasn’t much of an issue.

I was thinking it would be OK but it’s tough to tell what the wife will put up with. There seems to be a big difference between fishable and wife friendly waters. Hopefully it works out and she gets some fish.
    Thanks

One thing I’ve learned about Mille Lacs over the last few years…..NEVER trust the predicted wind report! Seems every time I head up there it’s blowing 10-20 miles an hour more than forecasted. Must be the lake gods not wanting me there

the wind was around predicted of 14-17, whuch seemed to equall about 2-3′ rollers. It was fishable but not very fun and the wife wasn’t having a lot of fun. One issue is my boat is very deep and really gets grabbed by the wind making it more difficult to control. Had a couple fish shake off but not much else going on, also didn’t stay long. We hit a smaller lake on the way back and picked up a couple small eyes, crappie, bluegill, perch and a big sheephead. It was a nice day to be out with the wife, much better than the downpours from yesterday. 4 different bodies of water in 3 days though, the wife even wanted to go out again tomorrow after work, I said we’ll see.

Thanks for the info Mark, I was just having to many issues keeping the boat in the zone but the color change did seem to help.

When might I be able to watch the new episodes on YouTube. Living here in ohio, I don’t get Fox Sports North.

It hasn’t been added to YouTube yet. I don’t get to watch it on tv, because I’m in ohio. I’ll be watching for the update all day today.

Normally when it’s added to YT, it’s posted in the General Forum.

Hang in there. I can’t watch it on tv either. Can’t find the remote control and these people keep coming in wanting to go out fishing… wth? LOL!
