Big fish on the rocks

Had a great opener this year, not for keepers but for big fish. The majority of the time we pulled small cranks on the rocks in 10′ or less and had a ball with the big eyes. We hit a new record of 6 fish over the 27″ mark. Caught a fair amount more in the 22″ -26″ mark also. The small mouth were in the same area and they found our cranks on occassion. Several 20″ and a few from 16″ to 19″. Can’t wait until they open so I can target them and maybe find a true pig. Only 3 keeper walleye, but lots of fun with the bigger fish. Be back Thursday night to see if they are still there.

We found just the opposite on the rocks we trolled. Many small fish with just a few bigger ones. Ended up with enough just under the 17″ to take 1st place in the Big D. Did find some of those big fryin pan smallies to. Those things where tanks. Stick baits at night where the ticket for us. Red Rouges.

We too found big fish trolling the rocks, but most of ours were smallies! Plenty of rock bass and the occasional pig walleye. We found our limit of eater walleyes trolling the sand. Almost all the eyes in the sand were under 20″ with every other to every third going in the well.

It sounds like you guys had some great action trolling cranks in the shallows. And here I thought with the early spring and warmer water temps that those fish would already be out in the open basin. I’m hoping to find out real soon.
