I am plannning on having a Catch Photo Release Tourney on Mille Lacs in late July or early August. I don’t have the full details ironed out right now but I will be having the Tourney. This will be a 25 boat max. tourney and I have a feeling this tourney will fill up fast so if your interested please send an e-mail to [email protected] with “CPR Mille Lacs” in the title and I will reserve your spot.

Stay tuned for more details this Friday

CPR tourneys are exactly what we need on Mille Lacs!

I wish I could fish this, but I don’t think the timing will work out for me as my last weekend in July and 1st weekend in August are already booked

    I am interested

I have this new camera that enlarges my fishing photos simply by expanding two fingers.

question….could this be scheduled so it doesn’t interfere with the annual couples tourney out of Mac’s Twin Bay? I think their event is around the 1st of August.

first off iam not anti tournamemt. i have fished in them and for a number of years, weighed fish for the wave wacker. going by the dnr’s ssb numbers, the ssb is 50% less than it was when the netting started. going by the dnr numbers, the lake in trouble and the time to do something is now, not after it crashes. in the years that i weighed fish at the wave wacker the number of over 28 inch fish has dropped. in my own fishing, the number of fish over 26 inches that i have caught has dropped. it looks to me that the lake is in a downward sprial that will end up like red lake. because we, the tax payers of minnesota, will be the ones who pay for and fix the problem, we have to be proactive and i think a 5 year moratoriam on fishing touraments is something that will cut down on the total hook and line quota. i understand that yours is a cpr tourney, but there is still a mortality rate attached to the total catch, that counts against the hook and line quota. i don’t want to see a 14 to 16 inch slot again. heres a question for you…. would you rather fish tournaments on mille lacs or have the lake shutdown to walleye fishing in july because we are closing in on the hook and line quota??? ottertail, leech, winnie, red, just to name a few, would be great lakes to have a tournament on durning the time frame that you are looking at. this is just my opinion and by no means do i despise anybody for putting on or fishing in tournaments here on mille lacs, i just think we have to stay ahead of the eightball before there is a total walleye crash here on mille lacs. you have to understand that the dnr manages this lake for the netters not the hook and line sportsman. even if the lake is shut down to hook and line fisherman, the netting will still take place in the spring.

Are you also going to ask people who are visiting Mille Lacs on vacation during this time period to please not go fishing? The mortality rate is the same and they might even harvest some to eat. I understand what you are saying, but complaining about a small CPR tournament is pretty far out there.

i am not complaining, it is a opinion. i know that it won’t happen. look at all the tournaments that are already held every year, at least 5 or so every weekend from opener until the 4th of july. then all the rest scattered in july and august. now add a new one here and a new one there and it adds up. what i am saying is if the ssb continues drop due to the netting, something will have to be done so the people that want to come up here on vacation and catch and keep some walleyes will be able to. if the lake does get shut down, there won’t be any tournaments anyway. just thinking long term. do you have any ideas to prevent a lake shutdown if we get to that point??? or don’t you see the dnr shuting the lake down if we hit the quota??? now is the time to come up with a plan, not after the lake is shut down.

That’s why I opt for catch photo release tourney so there is little to no impact on the lake.

Puddle Pounder are you going to continue to fish the lake all summer ?

If yes so is everyone else and I’m guessing 98% of the people that are signing up for this tourney probably already planned on fishing Mille Lacs that weekend any ways so it’s not like there is extra or added pressure just people enjoying a competitive day of fishing instead of a day of fishing.

I’m not so sure on this idea, maybe if you switched to barbless hooks and musky cradles while measuring the fish in the water I could approve.

I wish I could fish it but am off to Ontario during that time. Why not add a little excitment on what would be a fishing weekend anyway.
We measure the fish and release them anyway. I see absolutely no issue with it at all. Enjoy & have fun!

I don’t think I’m going to be able to have the CPR Tourney as of now I am going to have to post-pone or cancel the CPR Tourney for 2012 but I do plan to have a future CPR Tourney on Mille Lacs.

    Jesse,

Just an Idea. But have you considered a night tourney during the fall full moon?

Brad Hawthorne put one on last year. We were given a sign that had to be in the picture with the fish. It was a fun time and we were smoking the fish, but they were all 15″ males. If nothing else, we ate good.
