Just for fun and bragging rights let’s see who can come closest to guessing the exact date/time for Mille Lacs ice out.

My vote is for April 1st at 3:30 PM.

The next big NW wind might take out. No wind–it could sit there 2 more weeks even with the warm temps.

Accuweather predicts 19mph winds blowing east with gusts up to 36 on Saturday. Does that get it done? Or is direction that important.

The east wind will push it up on the west shores. That will open a few 100 yards of water on the east side. Then the next BIG NW wind will push it SE and open up at least a half mile or more on the west side. With that much open water and waves, it could go out if the NW wind/waves chews on it long enough. Maybe it will take two series of wind changes but I doubt it. Or, after the big east wind you speak of, the wind doesn’t blow for a week…it will just lay there and very slowy deteriorate. But that could take 2 weeks. One or two wind switches with 15-20 mph. sustained winds, should take it out. One direction or the other.

A strong north wind is chewing the main sheet of ice up. Looking out from Myr Mar as it gets light, there is a mile of open water this morning. Hopefully, it be clear enough to get a space pic today.

I just looked at the Mill lake cams. Lots of open water out there already on the SE corner. The Agate bay time lapse photo shows the ice moving south every time the cam refreshes, pretty cool.

My favorite wife and I just took a ride around the entire lake.

The lake is iced in south of a line from Agate Bay Resort to Terry’s Boat Harbor. Near as I can see…

No doubt! It will NOT survive the present wind and the wind yet to howl the next 36 hrs. My guess at this point is that the lake will over half ice free by dark tomorrow (the 26th) if not sooner.

The space pic could tell the story the next 2 days–I hope.

From the north end there is zero ice in sight.

    Thanks for the update Steve.

Looking at the wind forecast if I’d have to say it will only be a day or two before a boat can make it from Isle to Garrison.

As it gets lighter, it’s obvious the main sheet of ice is creeping NW ahead of the big easterly wind. Will it make all the way and pile up? Maybe….maybe not. Stay tuned…

A boat can now be driven from Garrison to Isle. The line of ice is from about Cove northwest to Pike Point. There is ice west of that line. In other words, at least 75 percent of the lake is ice free!

NO DOUBT–official ice out should be March 26th, 2012.

I sent this to the Messenger a short time ago…..
