I see the reports are piling in, so I better get mine in as well.
After debating and checking reports Friday and Saturday I maade the decision to head up on Sunday. Seeing that the walleye bite was near non-existant during the day, I wanted to make sure I was up there for the morning and evening bite.
We arrived at Hunter’s at about 7:15 and saw a big line of trucks waiting to go on the ice. Wondering what the heck, I found out that a crack opened up and that it would be about 1-1.5 hours until they get a bridge on it. I headed over to Liberty and paid the nice guy at Dickie’s $10 instead of using the public access nexd door. He told me he had no open cracks on his roads that didn’t have bridges and we were good to go.
I made my fist stop at Sliver flat hoping to take advantage of a lower traffic area. Fished for about 45 minutes without a bite and left. Next stop was Big flat but there was alot of traffic and some people sitting right on the spot I wanted to try. I fished next to them for about 2 hours, again without a bite. Next I moved over to another flat and setup again, but this time I was looking for lots of open space and hoping to finda an area on the edge that didn’t have any holes drilled. This time I iced a 12″ perch in about 30 minutes and thought that I may as well focus on this area. I drilled about 20 holes in the area and was popping from hole to hole while the fiance was content with the portable and a bobber. About 30 minutes later, about noon, she iced a 25″ eye. We managed to have consistent action with walleyes, perch and tullies until about 4 pm.
Completely opposite of what I was thinking. They started at noon and quit when the sun got low. I only stayed until 6 so I didn’t hold out for the night bite. All of our walleyes cam off a bobber or tip-up and a fathead, except one came on a waxie and a small sweedish pimple. The bottom edge of the flat was key and jigging was a waste of time for walleyes. We finished the day with 6 eyes, 3 nice perch and 7 tullies for the smoker.
