Friday, December 16th, we are re-opening the ice access out of The Red Door to walking ONLY, for the coming weekend.

The open water from yesterday is now skimmed over. The open area, out about as far as the in close mudlfats (East Flat,Weimer Flat, Bombeck Flat ,Resort Flat, Matton Flat and Myr Mar Flat) must all be off limits for any travel for the next few days–at least. That ice, now only hours old, is and will be a for a few days, is not thick enough for walking or ATV’s.

For that reason, we will allow walking access ONLY. Assuming no one will attempt to walk to the flats…..so be fore-warned here. Simply, we don’t know for sure where the good ice ends and the new ice starts. So, with that, we “suggest” no mudflat trips.

The ice is just fine between shore, in both directions for at least a mile, and 27ft. of water. So walking to any and all shoreline related fishing grounds should be just fine. No snow on the ice makes for easy hiking and pulling gear out by hand.

We will update things on a per need basis in the next day or two….THANKS for everyone’s understanding and cooperation.

after splitting wood we will mosey over and see what is going on. Got to clear the sapping trail so dad doesn’t trip and spill another bucket of sap.

I’m not as familiar with the north side, is that far enough to hit some of the breaks up there? How had the fishing been up there before you had to close the access?

    Thanks

Most of the fishing reports, few as there are, have been good. What little activity we have heard of is from the locals. Best depths have been 12 to 14ft. in low light time.

On-shore winds on Sunday, the 18th, will allow us to keep the walking only ice access open.

This is day to day as long as the open water is in place out a mile or two, stretching the full width of the lake from east to west. Stay tuned for daily updates!

Fishing reports from this morning were good, as near as we hear.

Buddy and I walked out Saturday to 23′ of water. We managed to scrape together a single limit of walleyes as well as a handful of jumbos. Two larger walleyes, 19″ & 24″ were released.
Ice thickness was 7″-9″ in all areas we drilled.

A big thanks to Red Door for continuing to provide up to date ice conditions.

And thanks to all of you for understanding and cooperating with the iffy ice scenario.

    Here is the latest….

    Late Sunday–the 18th:
At least for the next day or two (Monday/Tuesday), we are still closed to any vehicle access onto the ice. Walking only. Our concern is that an ATV will venture out to thin ice/open water in mudflat country. Simply, we won’t be party to that for now.

The forecast for Monday morning is for a fairly heavy N-NW wind and then settling down in the afternoon. With that breezy start to the day, and the open water/thin ice stretching the whole width of the lake from east to west, we are concerned the big sheet will float free from the northern shores. Hopefully, we will dodge a bullet and the wind will subside without getting a hold of the big ice sheet.

    Stay tuned…

there are a few thin spots to the west, the ice was making noise Saturday eve. Be sure to cross the spots where they have laid plywood to cross the cracks, and have those GPS re-tracing your path to get you back to the crossings when it’s pitch black out there.

    Monday, Dec. 19th–mid day:

The heavy northerly winds this morning have a big gash of open water along the north shore–well within sight of shore. Most of it is about 1-2 miles off shore. In fact, it is open within a few 100 yds. of the Myr Mar point shoreline and to the west. The gash of open water is at least a few 100 yards wide–running for several miles east to west. Luckily, to this point anyway, the ice between the shoreline and the open water has not let go.

So we are advising NO ice travel from the north shore with the off-shore, northerly wind blowing. Updates to follow as needed….

    Tuesday, December 20th:

On-shore southerly winds are allowing us to safely open the ice access from The Red Door today to walkers only. With open water and thin ice in mudflat country, we will not allow vehicle traffic so no one is tempted to head out to the flats. The ice is snow free so bring cleats to make walking easier.

Fishing reports continue to be okay.
