Or the kayak just blew off the shore?

Apparently 5 of them left Cove Bay heading for Malmo in solid 30-40 mph winds. From what I have heard they thought they were experinced from Lake Superior however in my opinion on Mille Lacs we see a different wave more chop and cap not so much swell.

Kayaking Mille Lacs in 40 MPH winds, hiking in Iran, living with the bears in AK, etc.

holy crap! My brother and I went down to the landing at Malmo where we saw a van with one kayak still on top, we had no idea this was going on, we were getting into his truck when we saw two kayakers booking through the waves and I said to him “surprised to see them still in their boats” The waves were bad! really bad! There was kite boarding going on all over those sandy areas to the west of malmo, pretty cool to watch, but those guys were crazy. This is a sad deal, and there is no way they should have attempted a crossing of the lake.

Sad deal for sure! It is also a good reminder to wear your PFD at all times! Especially us night fishing guys. Stuff happens out there. And when it does it’s fast and it can be violent. Condolences to the family and friends.

It’s also a good reminder that a PFD is not a sure thing for survival. Thanks for sharing the link. Very easy to “monday morning quarterback” the first hand account and the decisions made, but I could not imagine being in that frantic position making those decisions. Thoughts for his friends and family.

X2. I wold imagine these guys are spending a lot of time second guessing what they could of done differently that day. I think they are lucky that more where not lost. Then again if I was going to go going out doing what I like to do would be the way to go.
