I wanted to share the story of my biggest musky ever. On July 29th (one day before my 31st birthday) I went fishing with my father in law on Mille Lacs Lake. We were slowly backtrolling with lindy rigs and leeches on the Mud Flats catching walleyes when all of sudden I had a very sudden hit. When I set the hook, it started pulling line like crazy. We actually had to move the boat back toward the strike to gain ground on the fish. I immediately thought it was a snag, but we were fishing on the Mud Flats and there are normally not snags out there. My father in law commented “Maybe you got a Musky?” I immediately dismissed this saying, “You don’t catch Muskies on the Mud Flats, especially with Lindy Rigs, leeches and 6lb test line”. Well after the fish surfaced we saw the red tail and we immediately knew it was a musky. The fish dove deep, peeling line; we actually had to follow the fish with the boat as it made four very long runs. After 45 minutes, we were able to scoop up the fish in the walleye net. It took both of us to heave the fish into the boat. We took two quick photos a measurement and immediately released the musky. The fish was 52 inches in length. I have caught muskies that have measured up to 50.5 inches and one that had an approximate weight of 35lbs, but this fish was completed different (I could barely hold the beast) it was a 40lb class fish for sure, on 6lb test line fishing for walleyes with a lindy rig and a leech. Absolutely a once in a lifetime fish while walleye fishing. The fish was very healthy and released, it swam away in good spirits and dove down to the depths for an opportunity for someone else to enjoy catching it.
