Do you think this hot spell will kill off some of the tullibee population in Mille Lacs Lake? I’ve witnessed it twice back in 2006 and 2001. It’s not a pretty sight fishing through hundreds and hundreds of floating tullibees on the surface.

Hoping not. Good thing is we started and stayed cooler than normal early on. That’s obviously changing rapidly, but at least we didn’t start off July in the mid 70s. Fingers crossed.

How warm are the water temps out in the basin, Brad?

75 degrees on Monday. I’ve already started seeing some tullibees floating.

I’ve seen this on Winne in the past. Was wondering if the same will happen there.

Mid-summer Tullibee and bait fish die-offs are very normal and actually were much bigger, year in and year out, years ago, than they have been the past few years.

I sure hope not I was wondering the same thing 2days ago, she is in such good shape right now. IMO this bite is as good as its been for me since 06. I hope they dont kick it! The fish appear way healthier than in o6(not nearly as skinny or full of warts)if the tullies dont kill the next 2 years are going to be huge!

I cant speak for ML but I was up on Pokegama in Grand Rapids over the 4th and following weekend and there are a TON of dead Smelt and saw a few Tullies. Was on Winnie last weekend and didnt see any floaters. I haven’t even seen a dead walleye yet this summer out there

I really hope not as I think a healthy tullibee population is critical for growing huge eyes on Mille Lacs. As I’m sure most of us are well aware for the past several years fish over 28″ have been less frequent to my boat, but after really seeing the tulibees make a comeback the last few years all of a sudden the bigger eyes have been showing up more frequently again for me this year.

It would be terrible if we lost some of the heathly tullie population again

Agree 100% on the big fish statement. Not to mention my kids and I have a blast fishing for them in the winter!

I agree – we have had a great run on big fish as well. If this continues though, I am afraid the die off is unavoidable.

It has not been near as bad as I have seen in the past, this is actually a good year and hopefully we are past the super hot spells. It happens every year, but this one is mild as of the first part of August. Sure would be nice to see a healthy tulibee population going into fall!!
