Just thought I would throw up a quick report of our Perch trip to Leech Lake last weekend. The trip got started with rather strong winds on Friday. Got to the landing around 10:00am and winds were already blowing at 20+ with the winds out of the NW and wanting to fish the NW side I thought it would be fishable – It was as long as you stayed close to the NW shore – Was able to catch a few fish on ¼ Oz jigs tipped with a fat head, Also caught a few fish trolling a SR5 Rappala. Most all fish were caught on the south side of sand point. The rest of the next 3 days were great weather for fall fishing ( From Flat calm on Sat. to still rather windy on Sun. ) Ended up with near a possession limit for each member of the party to take home as well as a nice fish fry. Most of the fish kept. Were in the 10-11” size with a few 12”+ and a few 9” fish thrown in. Also caught a few walleyes with about half in the slot size. Did not do much northern fishing but had decent luck the little bit we did do. There are a ton of 4-6 Lb. fish in that lake. Had to really sort thru the fish to get your keepers, I would guess our catch to keeper ratio at 10 to 1 or more. Best technique was either a 1/8 or ¼ Oz jig tipped with a fathead Size of jig depending on wind and water depth. Most all fish were caught in the 3 – 7 ‘ Depth ( Yes that 3 Ft. ) Caught fish near Sand point, Cedar Point, and in the Narrows. Overall, it was a great outing. If anyone is heading up that way and wants more detailed Info. feel free to PM me for more Info.
P.S. Also gave the Gulp Alive minnows a try. Did catch fish, but not near as well as real minnows – Think if jigging in deeper water while moving a little faster it may work better. Using it in shallow water near motionless I think the fish had too long to look and smell it.
