Today was one of those days I wish I could have every client experience. I had a family from co. for a half day this morning. It was a spur of the moment trip as they were on there way to wi. to visit a parent for her birthday which was a mother/grandma. They told me right off that it would be a great gift for her if they could bring some fresh walleye for her. Well I have been doing pretty good but most of our fish the last few days have been slot fish with a few keepers mixed in. Anyway the pressure was on and I knew we would catch some fish but the number of keepers was questionable.

We met at 7am and headed out to some rocks that I have been fishing. The forecast was for winds up to 20mph so I was hopeful but when we left the dock it was flat but we had some cloud cover. I went thru my little instruction gig and had every body jigging as I back trolled. (4 lines back trolling is not easy) Anyway the first hour we had 2 slots and one keeper and I was thinking of moving to some deeper rocks. But the wind looked like it was going to pick up so I stuck it out. When we were able to drift we started catching fish and in 3 hours we caught a good 30 walleyes and had there 12 fish for grandma. The wind blew hard but not too hard and the bite was hot. It was almost too busy for me to fish as I was busy tying new jigs, getting minnows, netting fish and taking photos of big slot fish. It was a fast 3 hours. There were no dinks caught and the largest was 26 1/2 and we had 3 that were over 25. The keepers were nice as 1/2 of them were over 16.

I have been fishing 3 different spots this past week and all have produced fish. Some times the bite is very good. and sometimes its just consistent but today was a hot bite. All on jigs and minnows snapped or ripped and from 8 to 10ft. It felt like spring fishing. It has been a fantastic year on Leech and I have trips available for the next 4 days.

    Tom:

Nice report, thanks for the pics too! Have you been mostly rip-jigging out there, or have you been experimenting with spinner rigs and other live-bait presentations?

    Thanks,

    Joel

I have done some rigging but the jig on the rocks has been more effective and is just easier in my opinion. However all presentations are producing fish out there. Its the beauty of leech lake. What ever you like to do to put walleyes in the boat will work.

Also all this talk about “the hatch” is over rated. When we went out that morning there were huge may flies hatching all over the place, my clients were concerned about it and we still had an excellent bite. I will give the hatch some merit though as I have experienced slow fishing during but I have had slow fishing with no hatch also so who knows.
