For you Leech Lake guys, I was up there this weekend for an annual event and let me tell you there is an awesome jumbo-perch bite going right now! 100 fish a day is not out of the ordinary. We started out fishing jig and minnows in 7′ of water, but quickly switched to blade baits when we discovered how ravenous they were! We caught bonus pike, musky, and walleye….although most walleye were in the 22-26″ range and had to be thrown back. We managed only two eaters for 9 guys in the four days we were there. There was a pretty steady trolling bite going on for walleye in 7-12′ over decaying cabbage for bigger walleye right around 5-8 PM on cranks, mostly blue, but black/silver worked well too.
All in all, a great trip with lots of fish being caught (And eaten). Anyone looking to see the fall leaves in all their splendor, just take a drive from Federal Dam on up to Winni…ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, but next weekend might be too late with all the wind.
Cheers!
