I’ve fished on Leech for the past three years and it’s been horrible for everything. I’ve seen people with success, but 90% of the time, people get skunked. I’ve got a freind telling me this year will be amazing due to some stocking programs and bird control done on the lake. Anyone have any input here? Thanks in advance!

I can tell you the YOY walleye in most of Minnesotas major lakes are at near record levels. It appears the 2006 spawn was excellent in most lakes.

I don’t think the bite will be amazing but it will be better if you like small fish. The lake is on the rebound and I think next year will be a better year in the big lake. Last fall I was out in October and caught a bunch of small fish 12 inches and smaller and could feel a bunch trying to chew on the redtails I was fishing with. If you like to catch big fish though now is the time. With little competition for food the big fish these days are not the usual skinny leech fish they are fat. The DNR still needs to do alot of work with the birds. There are still thousands of birds on the island, and now even the pelicans are getting way too numerous. All they really need to do is place charges on the island, wait for them to roost and BOOM problem solved.

Last fall was the best we have had for eye’s in over six yrs in all area’s, numbers of eye’s over the slot and keepers.

So I would say the slot seems to be working and with the number of small fish taken and big fish returned along with warmer springs sounds like a winning combo!!!
