For the walleye angler fishing Leech Lake, there are plenty of options available to catch some fish. The weeds are beginning to hold walleye, the shallow off shore rock piles are holding fish as well as shallow sand flats. The techniques to catch walleyes can vary depending on where you are fishing. A spinner rig, live bait rig or jig and minnow are all producing walleyes. Look to Sucker Bay and Portage Bay weeds for the best weed walleye action in depths of 8-11 ft. The shallow 6-11′ rock piles on the main lake and near Pelican Island are holding walleyes, as well as flats such as Huddles Bar, Snake Pit Flats and the flats between the 1st and 2nd Duck in Sucker Bay. When working these areas try spinners tipped with crawlers or minnows, a live bait rig tipped with a crawler or minnow or the standard Leech Lake Fire-Ball jig tipped with a shiner is always hard to beat. Vary size of presentation and speed of presentation with the weather conditions and how active the fish seem.
Muskie Opener on Leech was fairly uneventful, In fact walleye anglers probably caught more muskies than the muskie anglers. Some small fish were following baits in the emerging weeds, yet very few sizeable muskies (40″ +) were spotted.
Crappie anglers have lots and lots of choices with good fishing continuing on Leech Lake and all the smaller lakes in the area. On Leech Look to Sucker Bay, Boy Bay, Boy River and Shingobee Bay for the most action. Smaller lakes producing fish as well.
Bass currently appear to be moving up and on their beds in shallow water.
Make time to fish with a friend & enjoy the outdoors!
