WALLEYE ACTION HEATS UP WITH THE WEATHER
Walleye action on Leech Lake has hit a fast paced bite from north, south, east to west!
The warming weather the last few days has heated up the water and the metabolism of the walleyes as the feed bag is on. It seems anglers could do very little wrong through the holiday weekend. Guides from all areas of the lake are reporting excellent catches including many fish released in the 24-30″ range. The quality of fish caught and average size for 2002 is awesome.
Most guides using the Leech Lake standard Fire-Ball jig tipped with a Shiner Minnow in water less than 13′ deep on major lake points such as Partridge, Battle, Sugar, Pine and Duck. Drift fishing or slowly trolling jigs in these areas has been most effective. Jigging motions have made a difference from day to day. Some days “hopping”the jigs or “snap-jigging” is best while other days “dragging” seems to be most effective.
Crappie fishing, Northern Pike and Bass fishing have all been a good choice the last couple days. Crappie have been in 2-8′ of water along shorelines and selected harbors around Leech Lake. Shingobee and Boy Bay have both been excellent. Gypsi jigs tipped with a minnow under a slip float is accounting for most of the action. Bass fishing during the opening days produced many excellent pre-spawn bass. Reed Runner spinnerbaits are covering the shallow water quickly and efficiently.
Great Fishing is now,,,lawn care can wait!
