For walleye anglers on Leech Lake the report, well just depends on the day. The cool waters have kept the fish very sluggish and seemingly unwilling to bite at times. It is just about then when the sun comes out, begins to shine warming up the shallow water and turning the walleyes on. For the most part anglers are finding fish in the traditional spring “hot-spots”, yet “hot” has yet to consistently be the case.
Cool weather, cool breezes and cool fish it seems. Afternoons and days that the temperatures have been above 55 degrees the fishing has improved dramatically. Most anglers are working depths of 7-12′ of water and slowly drifting jigs and minnows. With the cool water temps the Northland Stand-up Jig tipped with a shiner is still #1 choice for most anglers in these areas.
Most boats only getting a fish or so every hour yet when the water warms….look out. The fish are there. It is only a matter of time before they have to eat!
Hot areas include traditional areas such as Stoney Point, Grassy Point, Pine Point, Battle Point and Huddles Shoreline. Some positive reports also coming from north ends of portage and sucker bays.
