I am fishing for the first time on Leech Lake this week and I was wondering if anyone had any pointers for me?

What are you fishing for, what species? Walleyes will be deep in Walker Bay otherwise in this heat, I would opt to muskie fish some weed beds around the island!

I was just up there last week fishing muskies. The fish were not moving much with all this heat. I got a ton of panfish off the dock, nothing of any size, but it kept my son busy all day long.

A buddy of mine went up there a week ago, he said those stupid birds have killed the great walleye fishing that used to be there. They went a week with only getting a few small eye’s and a few in the slot.

    Hey Joey!
Welcome to IDA! I would need to know what you’re fishing for and where you are planning on fishing before I would hazard advice. Like an earlier poster said the walleye fishing isn’t anywhere near as good as it was 10 years ago. But you can still catch them. Good luck!

Do not fish over by Brevik, or Bear Island, that area is void of any fish, seriously. I fished over there for a week last year, i can count the fish we caught on both hands, then caught 2 fish in 2 days up there this year. Between the Commorants and Indians netting, the fishing population is horrible on that side of the lake…

We did really well for 3 and 4 pound northerns in Boy Bay east of Bear Island, 2 weeks ago. You have to be mobile. Didn’t get anything but, northerns, perch and rock bass.

I heard the bass fishing has been great. The walleye fishing keeps getting worse every year in the big water area. Although Walker Bay, Agency and Traders Bay are Okay. I know the comorants have put a big dent in the population. Who knows about Indian netting up there. No one seems to know. I have caught a couple of Muskies. No big ones yet. I like to fish the big boulders for muskies. For bass fishing you have to go the the shallow bays like Boy Bay and the around Federal Dam.

Thanks for the reports. Years ago I fished Leech while working up there and it was great. Our last few trips have been to Rainy Lake (Minn side) and I have no complaints, but we were thinking of trying a different lake next year.

Any suggestions, based I what I have read on this post it sounds like Leech is out.
