Ice conditions are excellent throughout the Leech Lake Area. Most lakes have 22-28″ of good ice. Very little snow on the ground or ice making travel easy.
Travel you should as some of the fastest fishing action of the year is upon us. Perch, Pout, Tullibee, Whitefish, Panfish are all available and the bites are really getting good.
For Perch anglers late season hot spots are beginning to attract fish. Areas in Traders Bay, Agency Bay, Stoney Point and Sucker Bay are now holding plenty of jumbo perch. Depths of 20-30 ft are the best. Look near drop offs or find large flats in these depth ranges. Fish are moving around feeding on small crawfish. Aggressive jigging presentations have been favored. Mini Northland Airplane jigs tipped with a whole minnow and small 1/8 oz Buck Shot Rattle Spoons tipped with a minnow head are the two top producers lately. To find these fish move around the ice, use a depthfinder or Aqua Vu to find the fish. Don’t spend too much time in any one spot until you find the fish.
No need to “pout” that you missed Pout Fest, Pout fishing is at it’s peak. Anglers who target off shore humps in Walker Bay or Kabekona Bay in depths of 20-40 ft are catching numbers of huge fish every day. Twilight is the bite! Large glowing spoons such as the Fire-Eye tipped with minnows are THE way to catch-em.
