Excellent ice throughout the Leech Lake Area for anglers. Anglers are accessing most of Leech Lake these days chasing perch, walleye and northern pike. As for the fishing, well you will have to work a bit however there are fish to be found.
Walleye anglers are really targeting the evening bite in Walker Bay. The humps there that top out in the 35+ ft. depth range are giving up the fish. Some anglers have been fishing as deep as 50 ft to find the eyes. Most of the fish are smaller eating sized walleyes this past week with few big fish reported. Some better sized 20″ + fish were reported in the shallow water near Cedar Point. The fish are really in mid winter mode right now so slow presentations are working best. A small jig and float combination with a live minnow producing. The local favorite is a “Ghost Grub” in chartreuse or Blue. It appears that you really need that stationary presentation to get the fish to bite. However, during the hours revolving around twilight the feed bag is on, with some anglers catching up to 10 fish an hour.
Perch anglers have had the best luck in the 5-8’ depth range in Sucker Bay. The west shore of the bay has produced consistent catch’s of perch, yet you have to stay mobile as the fish schools are not stationary. The schools will move from day to day and sometimes from hour to hour. Stay light and stay mobile for success. Small #8 “Jiggle Bugs” tipped with wax worms or larva producing fish. Slow presentations under a float worked best this past week.
Have fun on the ice!!!
