Ice conditions improving rapidly in the Leech Lake area with the latest blast of COLD air. Deeper portions of Leech Lake, such as Walker Bay that are usually last to freeze up have now froze over and the conditions getting better by the day.
Leech Lake early ice hotspots such as Pine Point and the north end of Sucker Bay have been frozen for a couple weeks now and have enough ice for travel. Anglers finding 4-7″ in most areas here. Perch and walleye action has been pretty fair especially on the north end of Sucker Bay. Look to depths of 7-11 ft. for the best action for Perch and the breakline depths of 13’ for the walleyes. Active, flashy lures such as the Buckshot rattle spoon has been a favorite lately for perch. Walleyes are preferring a minnow under a bobber with a Ghost Grub jig.
Northern Pike action has been consistent in Steamboat bay for tip-up anglers, with some nice sized pike reported caught.
The area smaller lakes are in good condition for fishing with most lakes seemingly having 4-6″ of ice. Look for your favorite crappie and bluegill lakes to be very active with fish right now.
As always proceed with caution on the ice as this ice angling season has been slow in coming, the ice has been slow in making. Please wear a life jacket and do not travel alone when checking ice.
Have a very happy Holiday Season!!
