The only thing Leech Lake Guides are asking for from Santa this holiday season is ICE. Unlike in past years where guides are normally out fishing on the ice at this point in December, This year, this past week, many guides have been seen at local malls standing in line waiting to give Santa their wish list, of which is topped by the desire for ice. Fishable ice.
Even though it is taking a long time to get here winter will come and a hint of it is on the horizon. The smaller local lakes are beginning to lock-up and some have up to 3-4″ of ice. Some lakes just north of Walker do have up to 5″ of ice. It appears there is enough ice here that some angler will probably be out this week. For anyone taking to the ice this season the Leech Lake Guides ask that you are very cautious as you head out. The inconsistent temperatures do not make the safest ice, therefore extra caution must be taken. We urge all anglers to wear life jackets this early ice fishing season.
Larger lakes such as Leech do have some ice in the bays. The main lake and Walker Bay at this point are free of ice. Please stay in touch with the Leech Lake Guide Coalition for daily updates on the ice conditions.
Happy Holidays and maybe you want to ask for “ice” on your Santa wish list as well!!
