Fishing the Leech Lake Area right now one must think ICE! That’s right ICE. That is because for the most part fish locations are where you would find them when you are fishing “first ice”.
Walleye fishing the humps in Walker Bay has been exceptional lately. Vertical jigging humps in the 20-35’ range has been very productive, especially at twilight. The modest weather has seen an influx of angler activity on the lake and most have had some very rewarding experiences. Anglers slowly jigging Northland Fire-Ball jigs in the 3/8 oz range with a stinger hook producing. Fish in the mid 20″ class are reported off the humps and some anglers fishing the main lake are doing well as well. The main lake however has been more of a crankbait bite. Trolling the shallower rock piles and points, less than 10 ft. putting some fish in the boat. Implementing the use of planner boards, especially when fishing the points proving productive.
Other reports from anglers targeting the smaller lakes in the area are finding their panfish where they do at “first ice” as well.
Now lets see what kind of weather mother nature brings us and decide weather we are in the boat or fish house? Who says it doesn’t pay to be prepared.
God Bless and Happy Thanksgiving from all the GUIDES at the
