Big Fish come to those who wait, and Leech Lake Guide Coalition member and Minnesota Hall of Fame angler Al Maas has waited his whole life for the fish he caught this past week on Leech Lake. Al Maas caught and released a 57″ Muskie. The fish ate a topwater bait in Walker Bay of Leech Lake and it is understood that was one of 5 fish that day…..Al has not been alone as Big Muskies have been all over Leech Lake this past week. Excellent reports for North, South, East and West. Topwaters are producing many of these fish although anglers are having luck with Squirly Burt’s, Lily Tails and Bionic Bucktails as well.
Walleyes have also responded postivly to the cooler weather showing up on all major points of the lake. Hard bottom, rock is key. Pine, Stoney, Ottertail and West Bar all producing numbers of good fish. Jig and minnow presentations are most common and working exceptionally well. Some anglers are pulling crankbaits accross these same points in the evening and catching fish as well. For best fishing concentrate on 6-10 ft of water here.
Perch fishing has been great for numbers although some anglers not finding the jumbos they are looking for having to do some sorting yet the numbers are not a problem. Look to Grassy Point for good perch action and agian on the North End of Portage Bay. Shallow is again a key 6-9 ft. of water.
Grouse hunters are excited about the leaves begining to fall however populations are not that strong so you will have to work to find some birds. Same report from Duck Hunters. They are seeing some northern birds move in, not in exceptional numbers however a real mixed bag of ducks is in the area. Mallards, Wigeon, Ringbills, Teal, Goldeneye all reported this past week.
Enjoy your time outdoors with friends.
