DNR to stock up to 23 million walleye fry in Leech Lake

In an aggressive effort to improve walleye fishing in Leech Lake, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will stock up to 23 million walleye fry in the lake this spring.

That is great, I miss the way that lake used to produce. Maybe someday it will be back to its potential.

Man it’s hard to drive by Leech and continue up to Winnie in the spring but right now ya’ have to to catch eater eye’s. My cabin is only 30 minutes south of the Federal Dam public launch and I used to hit it daily. Now if you see 3 rigs in that parking lot, thats alot! Hopefully 5 years from now it will turn back into the fishery we all know it can be! RR

I saw this post title and wondered if they were wanting to make sure the cormorants were well fed, but I guess that’s not a fair assessment.
I too remember, and long for the return of, Leech as a great walleye fishery.

I thought they were going to kill off a bunch of those pesty birds last year. Any how at least they are trying to get the lake back to its potential.

How many did they kill? Haven’t heard much about that or how it went. They should kill about 23,000 of those dang things before they go throwing more walleyes in! Just one man’s opinion.

The trib said that the DNR are going to take another 1000 birds out. Judging from last fall that not going to make much difference. It is amazing how dead the lake is. I think it will be a better bite this year. The perch are out of easy eating size.
