I fished leech for the first time today (despite being from up north, Grand Rapids) and had a few questions I hoped someone could help me with. I am kinda a smallmouth specialist myself and know there isn’t many in the lake. But is it possible for me to go out and target smallies. Do any walleye guys ever run into them on the main lake? Any suggestions on where and how for the brown guys?

If not then I need some help with the largemouth. I caught lots of fish today fishing headquarters and boybay around rocks and docks and some in the rice/bogs, but none of those big toads people always tell me about. I got out there and I was overwhelmed with the amount of rice. How do I narrow down my search or am I just stuck with fishing it all? So how do I go about fishing in boy bay (I was flipping jigs and throwing frogs)? How about down by walker? Is it weedline fish and are they the size of what I hear coming out of boy bay and the federal dam? Just need a bit of a start so as to not waste a ton of time flying around a massive lake like that. Just boy bay is bigger then most lakes. Is there a color that is better then anything else (some lakes just have a magic color). I was using black/blue, and pumkin orange. Any help would be great.

    Eric,

Go to jimmurphyguide.com and click on his fishing reports link…Jim is a guide on Leech and is very responsive to questions such as yours regarding how to fish Leech. He’s fished it for years and can tell you about every nook and cranny in the lake. I’ve worked with him on the muskies and have found him to be very helpful.

I’ve never chased the largemouths in Leech, but have heard the same reports that you have regarding the big toads in that lake.

    Good luck in your pursuits…

    Eric
