The weekend

Weekend weather was better than the fishing for me. Sunday actually was a pretty decent day but we caught mostly slots. The areas I have been fishing seem to be either slots or keeper fish and not both. Saturdays trip was a short morning trip with some special guests and pictured below is Austin who caught the big fish for the morning. Sunday I had a full day and had to keep moving to stay on fish but we managed just under 20 walleyes with just one under 20 inches. We did find one spot that held most our fish that was out from a big flat near the break into 16ft. These females were spawned out and schooled. Nothing over 23” but lots of fun. I am a very active jigger but some of these fish preferred a slower presentation and I had to adjust against my will.

With males still spewing milk I think the post spawn is yet to come along with a better bite. I expect to see shiners soon and I think it will improve fishing. Currently I have just been using fatheads on 1/8 jigs. The best depths have been 8 to 10ft with the exception of the bigger fish that seem to be moving off the flats out to the breaks. Also It appears that over the weekend the better bite was early afternoon as opposed to early mornings.

    Good report Tom!

I’ve been on Leech 6 days since the Opener and found the same. Fun fishing! One day /area the keepers are 2 out of 3 and the next day/area might be 4 out 5 over 20″. Several over 26″…

A few days of warmer temps of at least 70 degrees will turn a fair bite into a hot bite–no doubt. The smaller eaters will show up big time!
