Headed up to the area with a crew of friends and relatives for the eel pout fest. However, I had another fish species on my mind and the means to undertake a long-awaited search mission for backwoods slabs. So while everyone headed to walker for the festivities, I hooked the sled up to my fish trap and set out.
I started out on some backwoods waters with minimal success, so I moved on to a larger lake that receives minimal pressure. After hitting most of the standard structure with little luck I decided to take a break and chase tullies over deep water.
I had no problem finding the silver stinkers in 60 fow. Then, to my surprise a nice 12″ crappie found the hole, followed by another, and another. All the fish were coming between 20ft – 40ft down, and I was catching them using a standard tullie dropper rig and waxies.
Once night fell, the crappies went on a tear. Between my dad and I we landed around 40 slabs, not a single one under 10″. Most were in the 12-13″ class, with two true Slabs taping in at 14.75″ and 14.5″. All stacked in 60fow. At the end of the day I called it mission accomplished!
