I have fished 7 out of the last 8 days. The fishing has been very good with limits being the norm. As my earlier report states I had found a pod of fish On Sunday (5/20) and these fish have kept me busy for a week now. With the exception of one day that I had to fish another area of the lake.
Monday (5/21) found me on the same fish as Sunday and it was nothing short of a “Hot Bite”. Guest were from Illinoi and they were welcomed to leech lake with a large muskie sighting that followed the first hooked walleye of the morning to the boat. The big fish just hung by the side of the boat and let everyone look at her before slowly submerging out of site. This happens a couples times a year and its exciting for clients and myself. This turned out to be a very good day with over 40 fish caught and a nice 12 fish limit.
Tuesday (5/22) wind kept us off the water.
Wednesday (5/23) Had single client and we had a beautiful morning with no wind. We only fished 4 hours and had our 8 fish and I was able to bring home a fresh meal of walleye. Fish in same area and just needed to back troll in circles to get our fish with good numbers.
Thursday (5/24) Had one guest in my boat and 2 in a fallow boat. Again no wind but the fish cooperated very well and limits were had by noon along with many fish caught.
Friday (5/25) Had to fish east 1/2 of the lake, the numbers were not as previous days but the fish were larger. We fished numerous spots with not much concentration at any of them but managed a dozen or so fish with only two keepers and the rest being 20 to 25 inch fish. Had lots of wind and it was a good time catching big fish.
Saturday and Sunday (5/26 & 27) Was able to get back to my fish from previous days. Had same guests for 2 days and we had a blast. Fishing was very good but a bit slower then earlier in the week. Some very nice perch had moved in with the walleyes and added to bag.
To sum up this week long report, the hot spot I have been pounding on is primarily small fish. The numbers are good but the majority of the fish are under 14 inches. Haven’t had any trouble getting our limit of keepers from 14 to 17 inches with most being around 15. These fish are in 10 to 13 ft and taking jigs and minnows or plastics. Doesn’t seem to matter as long as the jig is worked properly. Snap jigging gets the bites. Dragging just gets weeds and perch. Fridays fish were also caught on jigs and minnows but in rocky areas from 8 to 12ft. As mentioned the numbers were not as good but better quality fish. I have been very busy but the trips are thin the first two weeks of June and the fishing can be very good.
