With a tough start to the walleye season on leech lake this year, it appears things are changing for the best. Friday with just 4 hours to fish I started fishing where I normally do in June as many of my spring locations have not been producing good numbers. I didn’t find the numbers but we boated 10 fish with only 2 keepers and the rest slot fish up to 25”. We jigged a few spots and got a few at each spot. Not great but was fun and no one complains about catching walleye over 20 inches, and 25 inchers look and fight like 29s till you get them in the boat.
My Saturday trip got moved to today (5/20/12). I was not expecting much, the temp had dropped 20+ degrees during the afternoon on Saturday and a cold front has set in. Wind change was from south to north and temps were predicted to be cool. Not the best fishing scenario. Rain forced a delay in the morning and we headed out at 10am. I had fished the south end on Friday but “pick up today” on the west side. I had low expectations and decided to fish areas I have not yet tried this season. As luck would have it the first spot on my mental hit list was the jack pot !! Frist drift within 50 yards we boated 3 fish with one for the box. The throw backs were small. This spot produced close to 50 fish in about 3 hours of fishing. I lost track around 30 something and stopped counting. With that being said these were small fish, most 12 inches and we had to sort to get our 12 fish limit but kept fish from 14 to 17- ½. I was getting low on minnows and I put on plastic to save bait for the quest. It didn’t stop the hungry fish one bit. We had just 4 or 5 slot fish with the largest be just under 26 inches.
Was a great day on the water. We jigged 9 to 12ft of water with 1/8 ounce jigs and spot tails. As mentioned I caught many fish today with plastic on the same jig.
