Was thinking about bringing my 11 yr old for his first trip up north. I am thinking about dragging the boat from southern MN to fish the Walker-Cass Lake area. We can make a trip the weeks from mid-July thru mid-August. Looking for perch and maybe a few walleyes. How is the fishing during the “dog days” of summer? Any suggestions on a place to stay for 3-4 days? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I can’t tell you how the fishing is but I can tell you that taking the kids is a blast. This year for opening of fishing I took both of my boys with to Kabetogama for three nights of remote wilderness camping. One was two days shy of 7 and the other is 8.5yrs. They loved it. I didnt fish at all. I just made sure they were having a blast. They both caught several walleyes with mine and my fishing buddies help.

    Hi Len,

Mid July through August is my favorite time to hit Winnie. By mid summer, there are tons of fish that have made the vast mid lake structure their home for awhile and they can be easily enticed with a live bait rig or spinner. There is so much structure out there that you can always manage to find your own honey holes without a boat in sight. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
