Went out with a buddy last evening for about 5 hours on Leech Lake, Walker MN. Things started out interesting when we put the boat in. Just before my buddy backed the boat in the water he asked me “did you put the drain plug in?” and I said yes. He then backs me in and a minute later my bilge pump kicks on all by itself. I had not even turned on my master power switch yet but the pump was going and water was coming out like the bilge was full of water. I was puzzled and opened the access to my bilge area and to my dismay it was full of water. All I could think of was the plug must come out when the boat slide off the trailer. I just happened to have an extra plug and was able to put it in from the inside of the boat. Bilge pump finished and off we went. I did not know my boat had an automatic bilge pump that was wired so it would kick in even though the master power switch was turned off. Now I know why and am happy I have it. After fishing for an hour or so, all the while this was bugging the heck out of me, I noticed my rear live well was overflowing and it finally dawned on me what had happened. I stood up and looked over the back side of my wave wackers and sure enough I could see the brass colored drain plug. I had put the plug in the wrong hole! What a knuckle head move!!! I was able to reach down and pull the plug and the live well drained and the mystery solved!
The fishing was good, we boated 13 fish. Biggest 21″. We had 6 keepers with 7 going back. 7 were caught on Lindy rigs with 6′ snells & crawlers and 6 were caught on crankbaits, #5 shad raps in sliver minnow & firetiger, right at dark. We were finding the fish in 6-8′ of water and no wind.
Have a great weekend and put your plug in the right hole!
