Just thought I’d tell you all about our fishing trip to Twelve Mile and Three mile last week.

We fished Twelve Mile Tuesday thru Early Saturday last week, as usual when we fish…cold, overcast, rain and wind. The only difference was we caught fish ! It was a mixed bag, something different every cast in standing timber! We caught Walleye on jigs in the 12-16″ range, Crappies in the 10-13″ range, Bluegills in the 10-12″ range and then there were those pesky Bass in the 10-16″ range. Our biggest suprise were the bluegills in open water, when we started catching walleye, we thought about hitting the deeper 20-30″ water and lindy rigging…what we didn’t expect were the monster bluegills in the deep water ! It was windy so we tried drift fishing and that seemed to fill the ticket just fine ! We also tried fishing the drift with slip bobbers at different depths, but with mixed results. The colder weather had the fish scattered at different depths and not knowing to stay deep or head to the beds to spawn.

Three Mile… We only fished there half a day on Saturday, moved there off Twelve Mile after a very slow morning. We heard the fish ran a bit smaller at Three Mile and they did. We targeted the crappie in standing timber with jigs and they ran in the 8-10″ range, males just heading for the beds. But the action was hot and heavy ! Talked to some friends who stayed a day longer and they got into some crappie in the 13-15″ range.

These two lakes are but a few miles apart in Union County, about an hours drive southwest of Des Moines. Twelve Mile the fish run bigger, but has no camping or fish cleaning area, Three Mile the fish run a bit smaller, but has everything, cabins, camping, modern fish cleaning house.

    10” – 12” gills. I’d be as happy as a pig in… sh-poop.

    Thanks for the report.
