Here are a few pictures from the latest excursion to NE Iowa. On Sunday I took my nephew and as a surprise my daughters boyfriend wanted to go on his first fishing outing ever! Of course I had to oblige. He had never even cast a lure before so I set him up with a jig and we started on a sandbar to allow him to get the hang of it. I gave him the basic instructions and then backed up and let him get the feel for himself. It was frustrating for him and painful to watch for the first 15 minutes or so, but I resisted any coaching other than positive reinforcement and reminder of the couple of basic concepts. By the end of our trip he was casting like a pro. He even stuck a nice 15 inch Smallie and had a 17 incher break his heart when it came unbuttoned before he could get it to pose. My nephew is an old pro at 10 years old. He is very low maintenance after 5 years of fishing with Uncle Jon. He ties his own rigs, picks his own spots, catches fish and takes them off himself. He is pictured with a 17 inch dandy. And I rounded out the pictures with my 18 incher that I took by myself since we split up and were out of range when I got her. And then a nice 17 incher that they took me with to finish up the trip. Jigs and K grubs did the most damage with senkos coming in a close second. Early in the day the fish were slamming top waters although it was mainly smaller 12-14 inchers but a lot of fun. It was a perfect day for wet wading and introducing the great outdoors to another person. Nothing better than seeing a brand new fisherman have the excitement of a well placed cast yielding a vicious smallie strike.
