FYI-catching a few walleye/sauger thru the ice on the des moines below the hydro at ottumwa. most people are using minnows and a jig, i caught all of mine on a 1/4oz jigging spoon in chartruese green/orange. also catching a few catfish and stripers.

I live right by the DSM but not near any large dams. Do you fish moving current or do you have to find a hole w/o current? How deep of water are you fishing? I’d like to try it but have always wondered about the current and how safe the ice is.

there is a “hole” right below the gates of the hydro dam at ottumwa. there is current and we don’t always have ice. it needs to be real cold for a spell before we get ice on the river. even so only about a 1/3 of way across is frozen with 6″-8″ of ice. the depth i am fishing is around 10-15 fow. i certainly wouldn’t just wander around on river ice looking for a spot. if you know of a nice “hole” that you have fished in during open water and it is covered with ice give it a try but be safe!
