If your looking for some pretty decent smallie fishing the Volga rivers the place to be right now. The waters up about 6″ to 8″ right now but the visability is still about 2′ in the water. The third cast to a calm spot next to swifter water and i had a 2 pounder on, a few casts later and another one the same size. 10 minutes later a 2 1/2 pounder then a short one about 12″. We then changed spots and the gar were in there and no smallies so we went and ate lunch. Came back to the first hole we fished and about the third cast a 3 pounder. I had to go back to town to work on the garden tractor so i had to leave. You guys looking for a good day fishing smallies nows the time to go. This next weekend with a couple days of rain midweek in the forcast shouldn’t bring the water up much if the forcast holds true and it should be dynamite. Anyone Thats wants to spend a full day wade fishing just park by a bridge and start wading, I’d go down stream as my first choice and retrieve against the water. The fish are in the slower water next to faster water. The big ones that come up out of the deeper water of the turkey, from there to the miss. have come up river and are in the holes and are hungry. A full days fishing with top waters and i can see a 50 fish day with most of them being decent smallies. My friends son threw a blue fox spinner too a hole last mid week and had a very nice smallie break his 8 pound line, thats a big one, he got a look at it and knew it was a smallie. The fish i caught yesterday all had shoulders on them and made 3 to 5 good runs, had to check twice to see if my drag was set right just too make sure the line didn’t break. Wade fishing down river i can conservatively see a solid 30 fish day with 50 fish not being out of the ball park. The top waters i used was a bomber, about 2 1/2″ long with a spinner on the back in leopard frog color and a top water chugger with a blue top and silver sides and bottom, they killed the chugger when it gargled, they would hit it and miss and come right back and hit it again. The torpedo i chugged it then pulled it across the water for about 5′ then chugged again, they usually hit when it was being pulled and was making a V on the water. I broke off the chugger in a tree limb that i couldn’t reach so had to start using the torpedo, they just killed the chugger until i lost it. After the water comes down in the next few weeks after the spring rains slow its going to be absolutely dynamite with the new smallies of the spring coming up river, look out then! If you can get your waders out or blue jeans nows the time to go wading.
